What Causes Acne?

Updated: Jul 31

Stressed skin can manifest in a variety of ways, and it’s very common to see acne persist into adulthood, so be reassured if you’re suffering from post-adolescent acne. Acne is considered a chronic inflammatory skin disease, which can be ongoing or recurring with multiple symptoms, the most notable being the congestion and pimples we’re all too familiar with.

Breakouts are often caused by a merging of four factors, depending on lifestyle, skin condition, genetics, or environment. These four key factors that lead to blemished skin are:

  • An overproduction of oil from your sebaceous glands, causing excess sebum to block and congest pores.

  • Bacteria and pollutants such as free radicals penetrating the skin's barrier. Acne-causing bacteria is anaerobic (it cannot survive in an oxygenated environment), so within the skin, this bacterium proliferates.

  • Hormones can affect bodily functions such as oil secretion and levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), leading to stressed skin and congestion.

  • Keratinised cells remaining on the skin's surface after the skin's natural renewal, blocking the barrier of any beneficial actives and not allowing moisture to be drawn into the skin.

As frustrating as it may seem, it is well-recognised that treating and controlling acne can be a difficult process. There’s not necessarily an approach to skincare that works for everyone, so we seek comfort in the growing normality of blemishes. However, there is an abundance of bioactive skincare technology and ingredients that can alleviate the causes of acne, giving us more control. Discovering a simple skincare routine that works for you is a quintessential step into a journey to clear, glowing skin.
